Unveiled at Baselworld 2015, the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 made Rolex history. Drum roll please! It was the first Rolex with an Oysterflex bracelet. “Oh” I hear you say. It might not seem like a big deal but stay with me. This is no ordinary rubber strap, although it may look like one. The Oysterflex bracelet on the Rolex Yacht Master 40 Everose 116655 is hypoallergenic, durable, and cleverly designed—boasting two stabilising ridges that fit to the natural curve of the wearer's wrist. It doesn't move and doesn't feel like it's cutting off your circulation. The folding clasp keeps it secure. It's so comfortable you may forget you're wearing it. Almost, but not quite. It has presence and it's beautiful but in a classic, almost surprisingly (given the Everose gold) masculine way.
At 40 mm the Rolex Yacht Master 40 Everose 116655 is big but not overbearing. And Rolex do love their trademark highly polished and fluted bezel so bigger is not necessarily better. Keeping the Yacht Master 40 relatively small keeps it sophisticated. At this price point, and in this finish, that's exactly what you want. The jet black Oysterflex bracelet provides a dramatic backdrop to the 18 K Everose gold of the case and makes the hour markers stand out. Sapphire glass protects a black dial with centre hour, minute and seconds hands, and a date window at 3 o'clock, which is magnified by a Cyclops lens.
You'd expect a luxury watch that calls itself “The Watch of the Open Seas” to be waterproof rather than just water resistant. The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 is guaranteed waterproof to 100 m.
If water seeped in and damaged the movement it would be nothing short of a miracle. The screw down crown boasts a Triplock triple waterproofness system and a crown guard. The screw-down case back performs the same function. Not a single drop of water is getting past any of that. Rolex liken it to a submarine hatch.
The bidirectional rotatable bezel draws the eye. It's a 60-minute graduated bezel in matte black, with raised black numerals and graduations—these are polished to a high sheen, so they can be seen easily despite being the same colour as the sand-blasted background. The yacht master wearing the watch can use the numbers and grades to work out how long it takes to sail between two points.
The 40 mm's caliber 3135 automatic movement is bigger than the new generation 2236 movement of the Rolex Yacht-Master 37 mm. It has an oscillator with a paramagnetic Parachrom hairspring, which is resistant to magnetic fields, and keeps the movement stable when temperatures fluctuate and sudden shocks jolt. The result is consistent reliability and accuracy, even in unpredictable conditions at sea. The stop seconds function allows you to quickly set the time without loss of accuracy. The movement has a 48-hour power reserve.
The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Everose 116655 is a watch that takes you from deck to yacht club and over to the office the next day. In short, it holds its own in any situation and looks damn good while it's doing it. It might not be worn by Bond (the literary James Bond preferred a Rolex Submariner), but it's just the thing to have on the wrist when you're on a marine mission.
